EC rally curbs, raises cap for outdoor meetings
Allowing a physical poll campaign to begin across the five poll-bound states from Tuesday in view of the flattening curve of Covid infections, the Election Commission on Monday allowed in-person public meetings in open spaces subject to a cap of 1,000 participants, up from 500 earlier, while also raising the attendance ceiling for indoor meetings to 500 persons from 300. The relaxations will apply uniformly to all the seven phases.

SC revokes 1-year suspension of 12 Maha BJP MLAs
Holding that suspension of a member from any assembly beyond one session is grossly violative of “basic democratic values” and worse than expulsion, the Supreme Court Friday held the July 2021 resolution passed by the Maharashtra assembly to suspend 12 BJP MLAs for allegedly misbehaving with the presiding officer of the House as “unconstitutional, grossly illegal and irrational” as the period of suspension extended beyond the remainder of the session concerned.

Don’t blindly follow West in criminalising marital rape: Govt
Opposing the PILs related to “marital rape”, the Centre has told the Delhi high court that, among other things, misuse of Section 498 of the IPC related to dowry harassment and lack of a mechanism to verify when consent stands withdrawn by the wife are concerns because of which India should move cautiously and not follow other countries blindly on the issue. This has been conveyed to the court in a written submission.

CAs’ clean chit can’t stall co's folding: Supreme Court
In Antrix-Devas judgment, SC ruled that proceeding for winding up of a company on ground of perpetrations of fraud can't be stalled by shareholders citing reports from CAs, auditors giving clean chit or non-discovery of fraud. SC junked arguments of Devas and shareholders that since the auditors’ reports of 2012, 2016, 2017 and 2020 certified “no fraud on or by the company has been noticed or reported during the course of the audit”, the Antrix-Devas deal was terminated not on fraud grounds.

Omicron reinfection possible, keep using masks, say health experts
Top health experts have not ruled out the possibility of Omicron reinfection, which brings back the focus on Covid-appropriate behaviour and vaccination to check its spread and fatalities. A Maharashtra Covid-19 task force member said, “Reinfection is something that we cannot ignore in Covid, irrespective of the variant. Even if people have recently recovered from Omicron, they cannot take the risk of improper masking or no masking, because reinfection with the variant has not been ruled out.”
