Govt in SC for open-court hearing of review of Benami law judgment

The SC agreed to consider the Centre’s submissions for an open court hearing of its plea seeking review of the judgment by which several provisions of the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Act, 2016 were struck down. The court had struck down section 3(2) and section 5 of Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act, 1988, and one of the provisions which provided for the punishment of a maximum jail term of three years or a fine or both for those indulging in ‘benami’ transactions.

Govt sets March 1 deadline for TV channels to report obligatory public service content

The information and broadcasting ministry has advised private TV channels to report their obligatory public service broadcasting content to the government with effect from March 1. Though the government advisory said “voluntary compliance and self-certification” will be the guiding principles of the directive, it laid down a clutch of overarching pointers that would help TV channels develop content, account for time, and report compliance.

The highways and railway sectors are likely to get a combined budgetary allocation of over Rs 4 lakh crore, the highest ever. Both the ministries may see 20-30% increase in their allocation considering their track record in spending so far. During the current financial year, the Centre has allocated almost Rs 2 lakh crore for the road transport and highways ministry and going by the current trend of expenditure; the total spending is likely to touch Rs 2.1 lakh crore by March end.

Wrestlers end protest after getting assurances that grievances would be addressed

The aggrieved grapplers called off their protest late on Friday night after getting assurances from the government that their grievances would be addressed, the first step of which was the stepping aside of under-fire Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The wrestlers, decided to end their protest after a breakthrough was achieved during a second round of talks with union sports minister Anurag Thakur.

The CBI has filed an FIR against Anil Sharma, the managing director of the Amrapali Group, and six others on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy in connection with the killing of a former secretary of a reputed school in Bihar over eight years ago. The agency has also named a physician, Dr Praveen Sinha, businessman Rajendra Singhania, advocate Shambhu Sharan Singh and a few others as accused in the FIR.

SC to govt: Pay gas leak victims from your pocket

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said the Centre is not prevented from increasing the amount of compensation to the victims of the Bhopal gas leak tragedy and it can pay the amount from its pocket, not seek re-opening of its settlement with Union Carbide to increase a claim it accepted more than three decades ago.

Collegium sends names to govt for appointment as HC judges

The Supreme Court collegium has recommended to the Centre names of eight persons for appointment as judges in five different high courts. The names included that of judicial officer Golmei Gaiphulshillu Kabui who, if cleared by the Centre, would be the first woman from the ST community to become a judge of Manipur HC. The collegium comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph on Monday also recommended the names of two other women.
